Occlusal Splints Prosthodontic Case

Traumatic biting forces adversely affect both the teeth and the temporo-mandidular joint (TMJ). This force, which can be quite destructive, is caused either by clenching the jaw and/or by bruxing (grinding) the teeth. Often patients, unaware of clenching and/or bruxing during sleep, experience symptoms such as severe attrition, mobility, and abfraction of the teeth, as well as discomfort in the muscles of mastication and limited movement of and pain in the joint (TMJ) itself. Based on an accurate diagnosis, a customized occlusal splint can be designed to be worn during sleep to protect the teeth and minimize stress on the joint.
